Which major city to visit in Asia?
My family and I are going on a “around the world” tour and one of the guidelines for the trip is you must cross both oceans, therefore, we need to pick some city in Asia to visit (Sydney and Auckland are both probably not possible). Off the top of my head I thought of Beijing, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
We want a city that is SAFE for tourists and that we can see many sights in, in about three days. We also want a city with decent shopping and excellent food is a must. We love food and would love to try anything new but also have some basic western food.

Tokyo is great, but within Japan, Osaka is generally considered to be the foodie city. Osaka is also only about an hour’s train ride from Kyoto (capital of Japan from about 9th through 19th century) and Nara (capital of Japan before Kyoto). As far as sights to see, Kyoto is amazing! Ancient temples, shrines, castles, and torii everywhere. One guy actually apologized to me because the temple we were at had been burned down and was rebuilt “only” 500 years ago. Osaka is also not *that* far by train from Hiroshima, which is truly an experience. With all the talk in the news about Iran and Israel possibly having a nuclear confrontation…going to Hiroshima will really affect your perspective. I’m not ashamed to say I cried like a little girl there.
I have not been to Beijing or HK. You might also consider Taipei, Bangkok, Singapore (Anthony Bourdain refers to Singapore as “Asia 101″, easy for beginners), Kuala Lumpur, Delhi, or Bombay. I’ve been to Delhi and Bombay and they were very interesting, if a bit overwhelming.
